Chapter Twenty-Four

Beckett

I look down at my phone, surprised to see Blaire calling me. I don’t think she ever has before. If we’re not together and she needs to tell me something, she texts me.

Hitting the green button, I hold up a finger to interrupt Kelsey’s rundown of the rest of today’s schedule on the way to the venue to answer. “Hey, Blaire, what’s up? Everything alright?”

Kelsey shoots me a snarky smirk at the fact that I’m interrupting her to take a call from Blaire.

“Yes,” Blaire says on a sigh. “Everything’s fine. I picked up your daughter at the airport without any trouble, and we’re at the venue now.”

“Okaaaay. That’s good, right?”

“Yes. I just thought I should warn you. She’s … not happy to be here.”

It’s my turn to release a sigh. “I know. This wasn’t her idea. Would you be happy if you were her?”

She hums, a noncommittal sound that isn’t what I expected from her. “I mean … I always thought it was pretty cool to tag along on tour with my parents when I was that age. It was an adventure. But then my life was very different from hers, so my experience isn’t necessarily something to go by.”

“Oh, um, right.” It occurs to me that I know almost nothing about Blaire’s history, her family, anything that she did before touring with me. I mean, I know she’s been working with Cataclysm for a few years. But I didn’t realize she’d been on tour as a kid. “Your parents went on tour?”

“Yeah, as contract musicians. That’s not important right now, though. I need to get back to work. I just wanted you to be aware that you have an unhappy preteen in your dressing room. Talk later.”

She hangs up before I can say goodbye, and I stare at my phone for a second before returning my attention to Kelsey.

“Everything alright?”

Shrugging, I sit back in the seat. “Yeah. I think so.” I fill her in on what Blaire had to say, knowing what’s coming next.

“You really should get her a companion.”

I snort. “A companion? Are we in a Jane Austen novel?”

Kelsey scoffs. “I thought it sounded better than nanny. Either way, she needs someone to keep her entertained.” She gestures at the lengthy itinerary she’s been reading me from her tablet screen. “We both know you can’t do it. What do you expect her to do while you’re working? And let’s just be clear—you’re working almost twenty-four-seven. Sandwiching fifteen to thirty minutes with your daughter in here and there isn’t going to be enough to keep her out of trouble.”

Opening my mouth to respond, I realize I don’t have an answer to any of Kelsey’s very good points. “We’ll figure something out.”

She gives me a dubious look, but I don’t want to hire a nanny for a twelve-year-old. Especially not without talking to her first. And now that I know Blaire’s been on tour as a kid, she might just be able to help me out with some ideas.

It’s worth a shot, at least.
